Why Would You Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Orthodontic treatment is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay, and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches. Orthodontic treatment can help you to bite more evenly and reduce the strain. If you have any such problems then you can consult with the dentist and they will implant the braces on your teeth. Even they can also do some small dental surgery to fix your teeth and it is also known as dental cosmetic surgery as well.

Do You Need Orthodontics?

This can be decided by your dentist. He is the only person who can tell you whether you can benefit from orthodontics. A dentist can decide whether orthodontic treatment is recommended, and will develop a treatment plan that’s right for you.

If you have struggled or affected by any in the below list, you might find it beneficial to schedule a round of consultation with an orthodontic doctor.

  1. Overbite:  Where the upper front teeth lie too forward over the lower teeth and is followed with pain

  2. Underbite:  A bulldog appearance where the lower teeth when biting together normally

  3. Openbite: Space between the biting surface of the front teeth when the back teeth bite together

  4. Spacing: Just gaps and wide spaces, this could be a result of missing teeth

  5. Crowding: When there are too many teeth at the same place

  6. Braces: The most common fixed appliances, braces consist of bands, wires or brackets. These bands are connected to the teeth and provide the needed anchor like strength for the constructions. Brackets are most often bonded to the front of the tooth. Archwires are passed through the brackets and attached to the bands. Tightening the arc wire puts tension on the teeth gradually moving them to their proper position. Nowadays braces come in bright colors for kids. You do not need to wear these braces for a longer period and after a certain time, when your teeth positioned in a correct way, you can remove the brace.

  7. Special Fixed Appliances: Used to control thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. These appliances are attached to the teeth by bands. They are very uncomfortable and stand as barriers to chewing food.

  8. Fixed Space Maintainers: If a baby tooth is lost permanently, a space maintainer is used to keep the space open until the permanent tooth erupts. A band is attached to the tooth next to the empty space, and a wire is extended on the other side of the space.

Dental Removal Procedures:

  1. Aligners: Often considered as a substitute for braces, serial aligners are employed by an increasing number of doctors to move teeth in similar methods that are employed by fixed appliances work. Aligners have the advantage of being virtually invisible and can be easily removed for eating or flossing.

  2. Jaw Repositioning Splints: These devices that have to be worn on either the top or lower jaw and support the jaw to close in a desirable position.

  3. Lip And Cheek Bumpers: These are designed to keep the lips or cheeks away from the teeth. Lips and cheek muscles can exert pressure on the teeth. This pressure on the teeth can be relieved with the help of these bumpers.

  4. Removable Retainers: worn on the roof of the month, these devices prevent shifting of the teeth to their previous position. They can also be modified and used to prevent thumb sucking.

The length of orthodontic treatment depends upon the condition of the problem. Most of the people can be treated in one to two years.
