What Do You Need To Know About Retaining Walls?

While choosing the right retaining walls for your project, you have to consider few things. There are lot of things which you need to think regarding the retaining wall, and these include the wall condition, the materials that you use, the kind of weather that your country experiences, and lots more.

Type of the wall:

Before doing anything you need to understand about the different types of retaining walls available in the market for you. Normally the walls are divided into four major parts, which are reinforced soil or nailed walls, gravity walls, anchored walls and cantilever walls. Each type has their own strength and characteristics.

  1. Reinforced soil or nailed walls

These systems do not simply consist of the wall itself, but make use of reinforcing grids or straps to contain and stabilise the slope. Typical reinforced soil or nailed walls include concrete or steel panel-faced R.E. walls, wire mesh or fabric-faced R.E. walls, etc.

  1. Gravity walls

They are often made from stone or other heavy materials, and rely on the weight of their own mass to resist pressures from the retained material. Modern gravity walls include concrete crib walls, gabions, boulders, and large, precast concrete blocks. They can withstand pressure to a long extent, and you can maintain these walls for a long time.

  1. Anchored walls

These walls are pinned both top and bottom using cables, or other stays, which are anchored in the rock or soil behind it. As the name itself suggests, the anchoring or holding properly is an integral factor that you get from these walls.

  1. Cantilever walls

Before the introduction of modern reinforced-soil gravity walls, cantilevered walls were the most common type of taller retaining walls. Typical cantilever walls include reinforced concrete, or concrete-filled block work, concrete or timber sleeper walls, etc.

What needs to be retained?

The retaining walls ‘expert says that these three questions should be asked in the very first moment,

  1. What kind of material will the wall be retaining?

  2. If the material is fill material then is it controlled filled or not?

  3. In case of cut face material, what is the type of ground?

Answers to these three questions help the people in making a valid decision. Since they already know what kind of ground, they are covering and what type of material the wall is retaining. For both designing purpose and choosing purpose it is the best option for making your decision regarding choosing the wall.

Height and width of the walls:

Every wall comes with a different size chart so before making the decision have look in the chart and compare it with your project as in which wall suits your work in the best possible way. There is a ratio of height of the wall with base, setback, and footprint. Therefore, while designing wall, try to keep a check on the ratio else the wall will not look the way you wish it to and will not have the necessary strength in its structure. Not every project has sufficient area so keep the height and footprint in your consideration.

Rules and regulations:

Every country and the state within have different rules and regulations regarding the type of retaining walls. So before making the decision keep in mind to check the rules about which wall is right for the area you are thinking to build it. Make sure to follow the retaining structures code. As non- compliance of these codes can bring the result of removing the entire structure, which has been built recently.

It is always mandatory to consult with high quality retaining wall specialists who can go for wall-retaining policies with high benefits. You can check the price details online also.
