Tips to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets

If your cabinets look old and out-dated, but not to worry, you can still make them look new and good by painting them. This can work wonders in your kitchen. Painting the kitchen cabinets is not an easy task, and just in case you are planning to paint it yourself, here are some kitchen cabinet painting ideas that you can take care of while painting the kitchen cabinets:

Choose the Right Paint

You cannot choose the everyday wall paint for your kitchen cabinet painting ideas. This is simply because it has a formula which is not suited for the surface of the cabinet. This might chip and in most of the occasions is unable to stand up to repeated cleaning. In addition, it cost more, and therefore it is ideally recommended to choose alkyd enamel, which can easily last for a long period. The formulas of these paints are self-levelling and it means that you will have cabinets with a smoother finish.

Select a Colour that can Enhance the Look of the Appliance

When you plan to paint the kitchen cabinets, make sure that you are choosing a colour that will uplift the look of the appliances. To have a brighter looking kitchen, contrasting colours is the best option. However, if you want your kitchen to have contemporary look, you should go for matching colours.

Choose a Primer

You also need to select a primer and get it tinted to get an equivalent colour like the top coat because it helps in preventing stained or dark surface. It is important to ensure that the paint that you use is suitable for laminate, metal, or wood. You can consult an expert in the paint store and choose the paint as per their suggestions.

Things to Do While PaintingBefore you start painting the cabinet, there are certain things that you need to do:

Remove the hinges and the screws. The cabinet knob also has to be removed along with the magnets, which help in keeping the door shut. This might take some time, but it is better to have a clean slate when you start refinishing the surface.

Place hardware from each cabinet in a separate plastic bag and mark them with the help of permanent markers. After that, put a sticky note on the coordinating door of the cabinet. This way you will know the screws, knobs, and hinges will go with every door. They are going to align perfectly when you put them back on.

Open the windows for proper ventilation. You should also put on the safety gear. Scrub the drawer fronts, face frames, and shelving with the help of an abrasive pad after dipping it into a liquid de-glosser. Make sure that you hold a cloth underneath for catching the drips. Wipe the residue with a clean cloth before the de-glosser evaporates.

Before painting the cabinet, apply two coats of primer. Remember, prep is the key to get long-lasting cabinets. The primer will help the paint adhere better to the cabinet.

If you are painting the cabinets indoor, you need to make sure that there is enough space. For protecting the surface, place a plastic drop cloth and then use canvas drop cloth as it proves very handy in avoiding surface staining.

When you choose the work space, make sure that it has proper lighting. When you paint in natural light, you will be able to see drip marks, runs, and areas that you might have missed.

However, your kitchen cabinet painting ideas should not be unrealistic. You need to keep in mind that the cabinets are not going to look entirely smooth. In case the cabinets have visible open grains, it will be visible through the paint. Make sure that you have enough time in hand when you plan on painting them.
