Scope of Powered Turntable: The Commercial Perspective
Speaking of the key objective of turntables, they are mainly used for applications where huge loads are required to be positioned and a continuous or regular rotation of the same is desired. Standard turntables may be categorized into two types, non-powered and powered turntable. Configurations also vary between high- and low-profile ones. The main categories of turntables are standard duty and heavy-duty ring bearing types and both these types can be further sub categorized into powered and manual types. The heavy-duty category is a better choice when there are requirements like extra stability; higher capacity and accuracy in positioning are to be met. The standard duty unit is more frequently used by industrial customers as an economical option for a standard satisfactory performance for applications that are less demanding. The capacity of a powered turntable unit is defined as the total weight that is placed on the unit.
Nature of Load: A detailed description of the constitution of the load is important, such as the individual weights of the components that are to be positioned on the powered turntable. The centre of gravity point of the load as well as the dimensions of the load must be pre-determined.
Process of Loading and Unloading: The process of load transition on and off the powered turntable can be a very critical factor to be considered. It takes an efficient lift design and the crucial movements are key in determining the impact of edge loading the unit must sustain during the rotations performed. Some of the most used ways of load transition are four-rolled on and off, done with the use of a wheeled cart, and four- slid on and off, done with a conveyor, and a four-placed on and off, done similar to a crane loading or stacking process.
Air Caster Turntable
Based on the air float technology, the air caster powered turntable operates by creating a film of air between the top and the base rendering the unit almost free of friction, thereby reducing the damage from wear and tear. This type is suitable for high capacity applications. Fitted with a traditional drive, these units make use of wheels and slewing bearings to handle heavy duty loads. Mechanical turntables have great industrial advantage and prove to be alternatives to air caster powered units for outdoor applications.
Key Features
Used for applications where turning is required more frequently.
Used for applications where the effort to rotate will be too high for a standard mechanical unit.
Standard powered turntable makes use of drives and a DC motor, use of AC motor is optional.
Clockwise standard rotation.
Platforms are rectangular mostly; circular platform use is optional.
Two direction rotations are optional and can be achieved with an AC motor and drive.
Platforms are mounted and rotated with the help of a permanently lubricated bearing known as a kingpin bearing.
Available in configurations of both low as well as high profile.
For applications where, low platform height is required, a low-profile turntable is used. The units are characterized by circular platforms. They have their drive motors situated at the edge of their platforms and are projected upwards above the platform. High profile units are used where low platform height is not a requisite. These units are characterized by rectangular platforms, circular platform use is optional. For high profile turntable, the drive motor is fitted under the platform which is supported by tapered bearings and inverted casters.
