You will always notice that all residential and commercial buildings have glasses fitted on doors, windows, and skylights. Moreover, glass walls and glass partitions are also common in many offices. The tradesman holding unique expertise in dealing with glass is called a glazier. This trained professional has high demand among all builders and homeowners, mainly in urban areas.


Glaziers are used in fitting and removing all kinds of glass and glass-like materials in specific parts of buildings. They are also needed to install sashes of sliding windows, decorative moldings on ceiling and pillars, commercial displays, and storefronts in large shops.

Primary Duties of a Professional Glazier:


#1. Take Out Existing Glass: When old glass panes need to be replaced in a building, the glazier needs to be careful while taking out the existing glass pieces. The professional must cut off and removes large pieces of broken glass safely so that no shred of glass remains back where new glass needs to be installed.


#2. Select And Cut-Glass Sheets: Glaziers select suitable glass according to the nature of the jobs assigned to them. They are efficient in choosing the best materials for installing glass panels on the doors, windows, and other parts of their customers’ homes. This selection of material is more important for the replacement of glass or glass substitute into per-existing fixtures.


#3. Install Glass Pieces Into Frames: The glass needs to be cut into specific sizes and shapes. It should be done as per the dimensions of frameworks of doors and windows. Usually, metal or wood frameworks are used in these cases, which may need to be assembled before installing the glass. Then the glazier carefully fits the newly cut-glass pieces into these frameworks or sashes.


#4. Seal Glass Pieces with Putty: Then, the professional should secure the glass fittings by sealing all the joints with cement or putty so that the glass cannot come out of the place later. Sometimes, weather sealing procedure is used fixing glass panes on windows and front doors to extend the longevity of these glass fixtures. Some thicker glass and glass substitutes can also be joined securely into the right place with screws of suitable sizes.


#5. Understand Customers’ Needs: First of all, a glazier should speak to his customers and get all details of their requirements. Different house owners have distinct choices regarding the color, thickness, and quality of glasses to be fitted in their homes, which should be maintained by glaziers.


#6. Follow Instructions On Blueprints: Glaziers study architectural blueprints of buildings of their customers, which are prepared by architects. It becomes easy for them to understand the requirements of sizes, shapes, thickness, and color of glasses from the interpretations of these blueprints.


Essential Qualities of a Glazier for Performing His Job


#1. Practical Knowledge: Training is a must for glaziers to enrich their technical expertise in dealing with glass works. They should also know Mathematics and structural designs to undergo this practical training for glaziers. They also should be able to read architectural diagrams and instructions for installing glass.


#2. Communication Skills: As customers want to speak directly or via emails to the hired professional glazier, he should have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Thus, he can explain all details of a project clearly to the customer before starting the work.


#3. Physical power: Since the job of fixing heavy glass pieces demand lots of physical strength, a glazier should have sufficient stamina and physical fitness to work for a long time. As he needs to stand on ladders or scaffolds for installing glass pieces on heights, he should have a perfect body balance to prevent injuries from accidental falls.


No doubt, an eligible person can take up this profession after completing his high school education and earning a valid license for doing glazier’s job.
